For NDIS participants, a stay at Liverpool Hospital often follows a brain injury, major trauma or neurosurgery. Liverpool is the principal referral hospital for South Western Sydney and home to one of only three adult inpatient brain injury rehabilitation units in NSW, so people frequently leave after a long rehabilitation stay with new equipment, therapy and in-home support needs.

Allied Healthcare Services Australia is a registered NDIS provider. For families in Liverpool, Fairfield, Bankstown and Campbelltown we set up plan management, support coordination and in-home supports while the person is still on the ward, so they are ready on the day they come home.

About Liverpool Hospital

Liverpool Hospital is located at Elizabeth and Goulburn Streets, Liverpool and is part of the South Western Sydney Local Health District.

Liverpool Hospital is one of seven adult major trauma services in New South Wales and the principal referral hospital for South Western Sydney. It is also the busiest emergency department in Sydney by attendance. For NDIS purposes the most significant unit on site is the Liverpool Brain Injury Rehabilitation Unit, one of only three adult inpatient brain injury rehabilitation units in the state.

Services That Matter Most for NDIS Participants

  • Brain Injury Rehabilitation Unit: One of three adult inpatient brain injury rehabilitation units in NSW, with a community rehabilitation team that continues therapy after discharge.
  • Neurosurgery and intensive care: Around sixty critical care beds and twenty-three operating theatres, supporting participants after acute neurological events.
  • Rehabilitation medicine: Inpatient and ambulatory rehabilitation, often the point where NDIS planning first becomes relevant.
  • Mental health and paediatrics: Including a neonatal intensive care unit and paediatric services.
  • Ingham Institute: Co-located research institute working alongside the hospital’s clinical services.

Worth knowing: Liverpool does not have a spinal cord injury unit or an adult severe burns unit – those are designated to other NSW hospitals – so participants with those injuries may be transferred elsewhere for rehabilitation.

Getting NDIS Supports in Place Before Discharge

The NDIA runs a formal hospital discharge pathway, and the earlier it starts the more likely a discharge date holds. An NDIA hospital liaison officer works with the treating team on any plan changes, a support coordinator lines up providers, equipment and home modification quotes, and a plan manager makes sure new providers can be paid from day one.

We explain the whole process – including why discharges get delayed and what we do in the first few weeks at home – in our guide to NDIS support after hospital discharge.

Getting Around Liverpool Hospital

Liverpool station is about a fifteen minute walk from the hospital, and a large number of bus routes stop on Elizabeth and Goulburn Streets. A seven-storey car park opened on campus in 2022. The Liverpool Health and Academic Precinct redevelopment is under construction, so entrances, parking and internal routes change as work progresses – worth checking before every visit rather than relying on last month’s arrangements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can NDIS supports be arranged while someone is in the Liverpool Brain Injury Rehabilitation Unit?

Yes. Rehabilitation stays are often long, which gives time to set up plan management, contact providers and progress equipment and home modification quotes before discharge. The unit’s community rehabilitation team continues therapy after discharge, so in-home supports can be planned around those sessions.

What if the person needs spinal cord injury or severe burns rehabilitation?

Liverpool does not have a spinal cord injury unit or an adult severe burns unit, so those patients may be transferred to another NSW hospital for rehabilitation. NDIS arrangements can continue through the transfer so supports are ready when the person finally comes home.

How do families get to Liverpool Hospital for discharge meetings?

Liverpool station is about a fifteen minute walk away, many bus routes stop on Elizabeth and Goulburn Streets, and there is a car park on campus. The precinct redevelopment changes entrances and parking as work progresses, so check arrangements before each visit.

Do you provide NDIS supports in the areas Liverpool Hospital serves?

Yes. We deliver NDIS supports across South Western Sydney, including Liverpool, Fairfield, Bankstown and Campbelltown, and will tell you what we cover in your suburb before anything is agreed.
