NDIS Support After Discharge from RPA
Leaving hospital with a disability is where NDIS supports either start smoothly or fall apart. We set up plan management, support coordination and in-home supports for participants discharging from Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.

Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Camperdown is a major trauma and quaternary referral hospital, and for many NDIS participants the journey starts in its acute stroke or neurosurgery services. Because subacute rehabilitation in the Sydney Local Health District sits mainly at Concord and Balmain, many people move to another site before they finally go home – so supports often need to follow the person through more than one discharge.
As a registered NDIS provider, we work with families across the Inner West, Burwood, Strathfield, Canada Bay and Canterbury to have plan management, support coordination and in-home supports ready for that final move home.
About Royal Prince Alfred Hospital
Royal Prince Alfred Hospital is located at Missenden Road, Camperdown and is part of the Sydney Local Health District.
Royal Prince Alfred is one of seven adult major trauma services in New South Wales and the principal referral hospital for the Sydney Local Health District. It carries a large quaternary referral load, including the National Liver Transplant Unit and a comprehensive acute stroke service.
Services That Matter Most for NDIS Participants
- Interventional neuroradiology and acute stroke: Including endovascular clot retrieval, which is often the starting point of a long rehabilitation and NDIS pathway.
- Neurosurgery: A full neurosurgical service supporting participants after acute brain and spinal events.
- Institute of Rheumatology and Orthopaedics: Relevant for participants with musculoskeletal and mobility-related disability.
- Chris O’Brien Lifehouse: Adjacent comprehensive cancer centre.
- Research precinct: The Charles Perkins Centre, Centenary Institute and Woolcock Institute are all on or beside the campus.
Worth knowing: Within this health district, subacute rehabilitation and aged care capacity sits mainly at Concord and Balmain rather than at RPA, so many participants move to another site before going home.
Getting NDIS Supports in Place Before Discharge
The NDIA runs a formal hospital discharge pathway, and the earlier it starts the more likely a discharge date holds. An NDIA hospital liaison officer works with the treating team on any plan changes, a support coordinator lines up providers, equipment and home modification quotes, and a plan manager makes sure new providers can be paid from day one.
We explain the whole process – including why discharges get delayed and what we do in the first few weeks at home – in our guide to NDIS support after hospital discharge.
Getting Around RPA
RPA has the weakest rail access of the major Sydney hospitals – there is no station adjacent, and Redfern, Newtown and Macdonaldtown are all more than a kilometre away. Bus access runs via Missenden Road, Parramatta Road and City Road. Accessible parking bays are provided at the main entrance, the King George V entrance, the Women and Babies entrance, Gloucester Drive and Brodie Street, with timed drop-off zones at each major entrance.
Who This Hospital Serves
Royal Prince Alfred Hospital primarily serves City of Sydney, Inner West, Burwood, Canada Bay, Strathfield and the Canterbury suburbs.
We deliver NDIS supports across those areas. If one of these is where you live, that page will tell you what we cover locally:
Frequently Asked Questions
Will the person go straight home from RPA?
Often not. In the Sydney Local Health District, subacute rehabilitation and aged care sit mainly at Concord and Balmain, so many people move to another site first. NDIS arrangements can start at RPA and continue through the transfer.
Can NDIS supports be arranged after a stroke treated at RPA?
Yes. RPA’s acute stroke service, including clot retrieval, is often the start of a long rehabilitation and NDIS pathway. An access request can be lodged from hospital, and plan management and support coordination can be set up before discharge.
How do families get to RPA?
There is no train station next to RPA – Redfern, Newtown and Macdonaldtown are all more than a kilometre away. Buses run via Missenden Road, Parramatta Road and City Road, and accessible parking and timed drop-off zones are at the main entrances.
Which areas around RPA do you support?
We deliver NDIS supports across the Inner West, Burwood, Strathfield, Canada Bay and Canterbury, and will tell you what we cover in your suburb before anything is agreed.
