Westmead Hospital is the principal referral hospital and a major trauma service for Western Sydney, and its Brain Injury Rehabilitation Service is a statewide referral centre. Participants from well beyond Parramatta can spend weeks or months there, and the hospital’s community rehabilitation team often keeps working with them after they go home.

As a registered NDIS provider, we help participants and families across Blacktown, Cumberland, Parramatta and The Hills put plan management, support coordination and in-home supports in place alongside that hand-over, so community therapy, equipment and daily support start together.

About Westmead Hospital

Westmead Hospital is located at Cnr Hawkesbury Road and Darcy Road, Westmead and is part of the Western Sydney Local Health District.

Westmead is one of seven adult major trauma services in New South Wales and the principal referral hospital for Western Sydney, serving a population of more than a million people across Blacktown, Cumberland, Parramatta and The Hills. It sits inside a large health and research precinct alongside The Children’s Hospital at Westmead.

Services That Matter Most for NDIS Participants

  • Westmead Brain Injury Rehabilitation Service: One of three adult inpatient brain injury rehabilitation units in NSW and a statewide tertiary referral centre, including a community rehabilitation team that delivers therapy in community settings.
  • Neurosurgery and critical care: Twenty-four hour neurosurgery, adult and neonatal intensive care.
  • Aged care and rehabilitation: Inpatient and ambulatory rehabilitation services across a very large catchment.
  • Mental health services: With a large integrated mental health complex under construction in the precinct.
  • The Children’s Hospital at Westmead: Co-located, hosting statewide paediatric trauma, burns and brain injury rehabilitation services.

Worth knowing: Adult severe burns and adult spinal cord injury are designated to other NSW hospitals. Paediatric burns and paediatric brain injury rehabilitation are provided at the co-located Children’s Hospital.

Getting NDIS Supports in Place Before Discharge

The NDIA runs a formal hospital discharge pathway, and the earlier it starts the more likely a discharge date holds. An NDIA hospital liaison officer works with the treating team on any plan changes, a support coordinator lines up providers, equipment and home modification quotes, and a plan manager makes sure new providers can be paid from day one.

We explain the whole process – including why discharges get delayed and what we do in the first few weeks at home – in our guide to NDIS support after hospital discharge.

Getting Around Westmead Hospital

Westmead is the best-connected of the major western hospitals. A Parramatta Light Rail stop is directly outside, Westmead station is about a kilometre away, and bus services including the North-West T-way stop adjacent to the campus. A Sydney Metro West station is planned for Westmead in the longer term.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Westmead’s brain injury rehabilitation team keep working with people after discharge?

Yes. The Westmead Brain Injury Rehabilitation Service includes a community rehabilitation team that delivers therapy in community settings. NDIS supports can be planned around that therapy so daily support and community rehabilitation fit together.

Is The Children’s Hospital at Westmead part of this page?

No. The Children’s Hospital at Westmead is co-located on the same precinct and provides statewide paediatric trauma, burns and brain injury rehabilitation. This page is about adults leaving Westmead Hospital.

What if the person needs adult spinal cord injury or severe burns care?

Adult severe burns and adult spinal cord injury are designated to other NSW hospitals, so the person may move hospitals before coming home. NDIS arrangements can continue across that transfer.

What is the easiest way to get to Westmead Hospital?

A Parramatta Light Rail stop is directly outside, Westmead station is about a kilometre away, and buses including the North-West T-way stop next to the campus.
